A new opportunity for students is taking shape at Ray-Pec High School as the district continues to build its first-ever JROTC program.

On Thursday, October 29, Raymore-Peculiar School District officials, including members of the Board of Education, Superintendent Dr. Slagle and district staff, gathered to celebrate the groundbreaking of a new obstacle course that will serve as an important part of the program.

Now in its inaugural year, Ray-Pec's JROTC program is also the first of its kind in Cass County. The addition of the obstacle course will give cadets a dedicated space to develop their physical fitness, teamwork and leadership skills while preparing for future competitions.

Among the opportunities ahead is the Raider Challenge, a team-based JROTC competition that puts cadets' strength, endurance, teamwork and problem-solving skills to the test through a series of physical events. The new course will help students train for these challenges, with obstacles that include a reverse incline wall, rope bridges, a cargo climb, a 12-foot team wall and more.

Construction began Monday, November 2, and is expected to take three to four weeks, with the course anticipated to be ready in December.

The project is one of the investments made possible through the community-approved Prop RP 2026 bond. For Board of Education President Ruth Johnson, the new program represents more than an addition to the district's offerings. It reflects the district's commitment to providing students and families with meaningful choices and opportunities.

"We are excited to see the beginnings of a program that will give yet another choice to our students and families. We are a district of choice and it aligned well with our current strategic plan. This is a perfect example of how we utilize our strategic plan and why your input now makes a difference in the next five years of our district," Johnson said.

As the course takes shape, so does a new opportunity for Ray-Pec students to challenge themselves, build lasting skills and be part of something new. The district extends its sincere appreciation to the community for its continued support and investment in opportunities that benefit Ray-Pec students and families.
