Help your child start the year safely with these quick reminders:
Plan your route. Whether walking, biking, or driving, review the safest route to and from school. Stick to sidewalks, crosswalks, and well-lit areas.
Practice bus safety. Arrive at the stop at least five minutes early, stand back from the curb, and wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching.
Use crosswalks and signals. Teach children to look left, right, and left again before crossing and to follow crossing guards and traffic lights.
Buckle up, every time. If you drive your child, make sure they are in the correct car seat, booster, or seat belt for their age and size.
Wear helmets when biking. Helmets should fit snugly, sit level on the head, and always be buckled. Bright clothing or reflectors help with visibility.
Follow school drop-off rules. Use designated drop-off zones and never double-park or block crosswalks. This keeps traffic flowing and children safe.
Limit distractions. Remind teens and other drivers to put away phones while driving. Pedestrians should also avoid texting or wearing headphones when crossing streets.
Review stranger safety. Confirm who is allowed to pick up your child and what to do if approached by someone they don’t know.
Prep health and wellness. Keep the school updated on allergies, medications, and emergency contacts. Pack a water bottle to stay hydrated.
Online safety counts, too. Discuss safe internet and social media habits, especially if your child uses school-issued devices or shares photos online. (Review privacy settings together and remind children not to share personal information without a trusted adult.)
